Stories of Feeding God's Children Hungry in Body & Spirit

Hope is Greater: World Help in Iraq

Hope is Greater: World Help in Iraq

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” – Hebrews 6:19

This year, we are bringing you stories of how hope is greater. Hope is greater than conflict. It’s greater than drought and famine and disease. It’s greater than earthquakes and hurricanes. It’s greater than poverty. And it’s greater than hunger. Read the intro to the series here and follow along on social media with #hopeisgreater.

Josef remembers the sounds of shelling as he fled Mosul, a major city in northern Iraq. Homemade bombs were scattered in the streets. But once the family reached the refugee camp, they realized that starvation was now their biggest threat.

Josef and his wife didn’t know how they would feed their four children.

Feed My Starving Children partner, World Help, ministers in the camp where Josef and his family fled.

Many nonprofits have already left the region due to conflict. But World Help faithfully remains in many of the toughest places around the globe. The organization is in a strategic position to provide food to thousands of refugees, like Josef’s family.

“[The food packs] were definitely very useful, helpful, and covered our persistent need,” Josef said.

Strategic Aid and Empowerment

Iraq

World Help is a Christian humanitarian organization that exists to serve the physical and spiritual needs of people in impoverished communities around the world.

World Help provides strategic aid and relief in crisis and empowers community development through sustainable, holistic projects designed to promote growth without fostering dependency.

Within these communities, World Help works to support spiritual development and enrichment. By joining with trusted indigenous partners the seeds of transformation are planted, while enabling the Gospel to be shared.

Conflict = Hunger

From World Help:

The people of Iraq are weary. For more than 10 years their nation has been at war, either with other nations or with rebels within their own country.

Thousands of homes have been destroyed, and the constant threat of violence has forced countless families to flee to refugee camps.

Parents struggle to find work and provide for their children since most businesses have closed their doors due to the fighting. Without a source of income, families must depend upon the kindness of others to keep from starving.

The refugee camps are frequently overcrowded, and there is rarely enough food to go around.

When government aid trucks arrive, the refugees stand in line for hours hoping for a small bag of rice or beans. But the food often runs out before everyone receives a share. Rationing and skipping meals have become a normal part of life.

Hope is Greater

At FMSC, we believe that food assistance is so important in tandem with community development. We are honored to work side by side with organizations like World Help that share our belief that hope is greater.

Hope is greater than conflict. It’s greater than drought and famine and disease. It’s greater than earthquakes and hurricanes. It’s greater than poverty. And it’s greater than hunger.

Thank you for believing this. Every time you put on a hairnet and pack meals or write a check or drop a quarter in a bucket, you are saying, "Yes. Hope IS greater."

What you do makes a difference. We need you more than ever as conflicts and natural disasters continue to wreak havoc in the lives of children around the world.
