700,000 MORE PEOPLE COULD FACE CRISIS-LEVEL HUNGER IN GUATEMALA

From July through September, 3.2 million people in Guatemala — about 1 in 6 — are projected to face crisis-level hunger or worse. That is 700,000 more than just a few months earlier.

Nearly 200,000 are expected to experience Emergency conditions — severe food shortages with few ways left to cope.

Why the hunger surge? Guatemala is in its lean season, the months before the next harvest, when stored food runs low and farm work is harder to find. High prices and possible El Niño disruptions are adding pressure.

Rural hunger follows families to the city

Crop losses and scarce work can send families to Guatemala City in search of opportunity. At the city dump, thousands earn just a few dollars a day sorting through waste for materials they can sell.

These projections show how quickly hunger can deepen. Families in Guatemala need reliable food now — and will continue to need it after September.
