How school meals change everything: Samuel’s story

How school meals change everything: Samuel’s story

Samuel dropped out of primary school. His family could not afford food every day and he faced a choice: Go to school with an empty stomach, too hungry to concentrate — or drop out and earn money to eat. For Samuel’s family, the decision was heartbreakingly simple.

Around the world, approximately 160 million children work to earn a living instead of going to school. That’s nearly one of every 10 children.

Two local nuns met Samuel and quickly realized his potential. They brought him to FMSC partner Salesian Missions where he was welcomed into their school. Most importantly, the school provided nutritious MannaPack® meals every day.

Now 14, Samuel is the top student in his class.

“Do you have any idea how many children go to school only because there’s food available? It’s incredible.”

If you want to make a powerful impact — one that will be felt for generations to come — this is it. Simply put: School meals matter.

A partner in Somalia recently shared, “Do you have any idea how many children go to school only because there’s food available? It’s incredible.”

School children holding FMSC meals

For many students, MannaPack meals at school are their sole food source most days. No matter what other challenges they face, these kids know that if they go to school, they’ll eat. A recent survey showed that nearly one third of all FMSC meals are served in schools or in after-school programs.

According to the World Bank, poor nutrition is a major factor in school dropout rates — children like Samuel drop out of school every day. And the long-term consequences of interrupted or abandoned education can worsen inequalities for years to come.

Getting vulnerable children back in school is essential — and meal programs are key.

We know that continued education and improved nutrition have a direct effect on the overall wellbeing of individuals, families, communities and countries. Looking long term, simple school meals can further equip communities to break free from the poverty cycle.
